More detailed information about the snowpack: 

dug in a sheltered area that was not wind loaded. the most reactive layer was about 16cm down, underneath a melt freeze crust. Otherwise there wasn't anything that stood out, just a lot of new snow. I did not dig all the way to the mid dec surface hoar or nov 29 rain crust.

The winds from the night before gusted at 90mph, there was significant wind loading off of ridge tops. there was a period of above freezing temps the day before this pit was dug.
